Choosing a Relaxer, Texturiser or Softener

Relaxers permanently straighten the hair, while texturisers and texture softeners are designed to loosen the natural curl pattern. Results depend on the product, hair texture and processing time.

Choosing the Right Product

• Regular or normal strength: Generally intended for fine to normal hair textures or hair that processes easily. Always follow the individual product instructions.
• Super strength: Commonly designed for coarse or resistant hair. Stronger is not automatically better—using more strength than your hair needs can increase the risk of over-processing and breakage.
• No-lye relaxers: Convenient kits that use a different chemical system from traditional lye relaxers. “No-lye” does not mean chemical-free or damage-free.
• Texturisers and softeners: Designed to loosen and soften the curl pattern rather than produce the same degree of straightening as a relaxer.
• Children’s systems: Use only products specifically labelled for children and follow every age, timing and safety direction on the packaging.

Important Safety Information

Relaxers can injure the scalp, hair or eyes if used incorrectly. Read the enclosed instructions before beginning, wear gloves, never exceed the stated processing time and rinse thoroughly. Do not apply to a sore, irritated or damaged scalp. If you are unsure which strength or system is compatible with your hair’s chemical history, have the service performed by an experienced professional.

After Relaxing

Complete every neutralising and conditioning step specified by the manufacturer. Afterwards, support relaxed hair with regular moisturising, gentle detangling and deep conditioning while limiting unnecessary heat and tension.
